As a maternity photographer London, I’m often asked when is the best time to have a maternity (or ‘bump’) photo shoot. Here are my top tips on how to pick the best time for your photo shoot.

28-32 Weeks

Probably the earliest time you’ll want to consider having your maternity photo shoot is around 28 weeks. By this time most women are fully ‘showing’ (i.e. there is a fairly sizeable bump to photograph!). Lots of women look to have their maternity photo shoot at around 30-32 weeks, before things get too uncomfortable for them in the very late stages of pregnancy. Earlier is also usually better if you’d like to travel to have your maternity photo shoot in a location a bit further from where you live. As a maternity photographer London is my usual area for photo shoots, but I also work in Kent where there are tons of beautiful beaches and woodland areas. These make ideal locations for maternity shoots.

32-36 Weeks

The most popular time for a maternity photo shoot. Make sure you get round to contacting your chosen photographer and booking your shoot several weeks before this though, to guarantee availability! My recommended ‘ideal’ time for a maternity shoot is 34 weeks – this is usually early enough for there to be only a very low risk of you having given birth to baby before the date of the shoot, and late enough for your baby bump to be well and truly present.

36-40 Weeks

You may be tempted to leave your maternity photo shoot until this late stage, however you do run the risk of missing out on capturing your baby bump on camera if baby should decide to arrive early. I usually have weekday availability for last minute maternity photo shoots, however if a weekend booking is your preference I recommend getting in touch well before this time. The advantage of having your maternity shoot at this stage is of course that we can capture your full sized bump in all it’s glory!
